How to Calculate Calories in Alcoholic Drinks
Alcohol contains 7 kcal per gram โ more than carbohydrate or protein but less than fat. Here is how to calculate exactly how many calories are in any drink, and how alcohol compares to food.
Alcohol calories are often called "empty" โ they provide energy but no useful nutrients. More importantly, they're frequently underestimated in tracking. Here's how to calculate them precisely.
The Calorie Content of Alcohol
Alcohol (ethanol): 7 kcal per gram
Carbohydrates: 4 kcal per gram
Protein: 4 kcal per gram
Fat: 9 kcal per gram
To calculate calories from alcohol:
1. Find the volume in ml
2. Multiply by ABV (as a decimal)
3. Multiply by the density of alcohol (0.789 g/ml)
4. Multiply by 7 kcal/gram
Calories from alcohol = Volume (ml) x ABV x 0.789 x 7
Example: 568ml pint of 5% beer
= 568 x 0.05 x 0.789 x 7
= 568 x 0.05 x 5.523
= 156.9 kcal from alcohol alone
Total Drink Calories (Including Mixers)
Many drinks also contain carbohydrates/sugars that add calories.
Add these separately.
Pint of 5% lager:
Alcohol calories: ~157 kcal
Carbohydrate (beer has ~10-13g per pint): ~48 kcal
Total: ~205 kcal โ 1 packet of crisps
Small glass of wine (125ml, 13% ABV):
Alcohol: 125 x 0.13 x 0.789 x 7 = 89.6 kcal
Carbs (dry wine, ~2g): 8 kcal
Total: ~98 kcal
Large glass of wine (250ml):
Total: approximately 200-230 kcal (one third of a bottle)

Alcohol and Weight: The Compounding Effect
Alcohol has additional effects beyond direct calories:
1. It is metabolised first โ fat oxidation stops while alcohol is processed
2. It stimulates appetite (via ghrelin) and reduces inhibition around food
3. It impairs sleep quality, which increases hunger hormones next day
A typical night out (4 pints of lager, late-night kebab):
Beer: 4 x 205 = 820 kcal
Kebab (large): ~1,100 kcal
Total: ~1,920 kcal โ a full day's calories in one evening
The kebab is partly driven by alcohol โ so the evening's
total caloric impact is almost entirely alcohol-induced.
