How to Calculate Garden Pond Volume and Fish Stocking
Pond volume determines pump size, filter capacity, and safe fish stocking levels. Here is how to calculate it for any shape.
An underpowered filter in an overstocked pond is the most common cause of fish deaths. Getting the volume right means sizing every system correctly from the start.
Pond Volume by Shape
Rectangular: L x W x Average Depth x 1000 = litres
Oval: 0.785 x L x W x Depth x 1000
Irregular (kidney): 0.75 x L x W x Depth x 1000
Example: 2.5m x 1.8m irregular, 0.6m average depth:
0.75 x 2.5 x 1.8 x 0.6 x 1000 = 2,025 litres
Fish Stocking Calculation
Guideline: 1cm of fish body length per 5 litres of water
For 2,000-litre pond: max 400cm total fish length
10 goldfish at 20cm each = 200cm -- well within limit
Koi require far more space: minimum 1,000 litres per koi
A 2,000-litre pond is only suitable for 2 adult koi maximum.
Pump and Filter Sizing
Pump flow rate: should circulate total volume every 2 hours
For 2,000-litre pond: minimum 1,000 litres/hour pump
Note: head pressure reduces flow -- check pump head curve.
Filter: rated for at least the pond volume.
With koi: upsize filter 100% and pump 50% above standard.
Chemical Treatment Volumes
Always calculate doses from known volume:
Anti-algae example: 50ml per 1,000 litres
2,000-litre pond: 100ml dose
Overdosing can be fatal to fish -- never estimate volume.
When adding tap water: dose dechlorinator for added volume only.
